3.23 understand the difference between analogue and digital signals

Analogue
Digital
An analogue signal can take any value within a certain range
A digital signal is just on or off
Analogue signals pick up interference which means the quality is reduced and noise is increased
A digital signal is clearly on or off so the signal remains high quality
Signals of similar frequency cannot be sent along the same wire due to the interference.
Digital signals can easily be sent along the same wire (multiplexing).
Quantisation* loses a lot of information when practiced on analogue signals.
Quantisation loses very little information with digital signals.

*Quantisation is the process of rounding multiple values in a signal to a smaller set. This means more information can be packed into a smaller space.
